Red Island Beach: Surfing Challenge near Banyuwangi



Banyuwangi located on the eastern edge of Java can boast for world-class surfing spots in addition to the already famous G-land in Plengkung: this is Pulau Red Beach.

Pulau Merah Beach is located in Sumberagung village, Pesanggaran Subdistrict, Banyuwangi, East Java Province. Called Pantai Pantai Pulau Merah because only about 100 meters to the beach side there is a beautiful little hilly island called Red Island, which can be reached on foot. This is a situation similar to the Tanah Lot island location to the main island of Bali. But unlike in G-land where rocks are found sharp on the shores, beaches on Sand Island are open so it is also safe for beginner surfers.

Compared to Kuta Beach Bali, the surf here is stronger, offering a four meter high barrel with a length of 400 meters, ideal for surfers to try the tube technique. But since surfing here comes at an average height of two meters, beginners and amateur surfers alike can enjoy this beach.
Red Island Beach was originally known as Ringin Pitu. There are two versions for the change of name. One version says that due to the reddish color of the soil and sand, this is where it gets its name, while another story says that at one time some bright red light came out of the little Red Island hilly to the shore, giving it the name of Red Beach.

Another feature of the beach is a nearby fishing village called Pancer, where you can stay in people's homes. Their hospitality to visitors despite life is simple, they are really warm.

Reaching Locations
Red Island Beach is one of the many exciting beaches found along the southern coast of East Java. To reach Red Island Beach, you must first fly to Banyuwangi or you can also enter through the airport of Malang or Surabaya, the capital of East Java province. The nearest airport is Banyuwangi.

Located about 60 km from Banyuwangi, the beach can be reached by car or motorbike within three hours, near Sumberagung village, Pesanggaran Sub-district. Due to the smooth road access, it has become a favorite weekend destination for Banyuwangi residents. It is advisable to rent a car at Belimbingsari airport as there are only a few public buses to Red Island.

From the city of Banyuwangi you can take a bus to Ujang Jaya towards Pesanggaran village. Go down in Pesanggaran market then proceed with motorcycle taxi to Red Island. From Jember, get off at Jajag terminal, and connect by bus to Pesanggaran.

Tips
May to December is the best month to visit the Red Island coast due to dry weather, as well as the best month for surfing. Even if you yourself do not surf, it is very exciting just watching surfers challenge the waves. While January to April weather and sea conditions are not suitable for surfers, yet still dazzle just visiting this beach to enjoy the fresh sea breeze and watch the sun slowly sink behind the hills west of the shore of the Red Island.

If you want to explore the shores of Red Island, try visiting Pura Tawang Alun. This Hindu temple was built in 1980 and is often visited by Hindus from the mountainous areas of Bromo East Java as well as from Bali. Unfortunately, the 1994 tsunami destroyed the outer walls of the temple but the back room remained intact. During the tsunami, a 13 meter wave sweeping the village destroyed all including parts of this temple.

During your exploration, you will see people wearing bright green uniforms. They are gold miners, mines found near the coast.

Activity
Red Island Beach attracts mainly surfers from all over the world, but it has also become a favorite place for family vacations. Paraglider fans use the island's hills to take off and glide down gracefully to shore.

There is also an opportunity for parasailing, while surfboards can be rented for between Rp25.000, - Rp50.000, - a day.

Children love to play with sand while others are active in beach volleyball, and other sports, and others prefer to take a walk on the beach or read a book in the shade, while enjoying the fresh air of the Indian Ocean.
